This is the last of the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park. It's called Spruce Tree House because.......those are spruce trees nearby? All of these dwellings, by the way, were built in the 1200s after Puebloans had been driven from their previous homes by a long and destructive drought in the 1100s.

From the National Park Service web site (https://www.nps.gov/meve/learn/historyculture/cd_spruce_tree_house.htm)

"The cliff dwelling was first discovered in 1888, when two local ranchers chanced upon it while searching for stray cattle. A large tree, which they identified as a Douglas Spruce (later called Douglas Fir), was found growing from the front of the dwelling to the mesa top. It is said that the men first entered the dwelling by climbing down this tree, which was later cut down by another early explorer."

I think I recently saw someone claim that these had been continuously occupied since the 1200s, about which I am dubious.

From Wikipedia: Many smaller communities in the Four Corners region were also abandoned during this period.[55][56] The Ancestral Puebloans had a long history of migration in the face of environmental instability, but the depopulation of Mesa Verde at the end of the 13th century was different in that the region was almost completely emptied, and no descendants returned to build permanent settlements.

This is why I generally try not to give much attention "someone claiming" =)
