The continuing spectacle of 5% of the house saying they, and they alone, can fix things, and the remaining 95% should just shut up and get out of the way.

Nice as it is to see their party in full public disarray, my fear is that the fanatics will eventually succeed in shutting down the government again & not care about the destruction they leave in their wake, like the SCOTUS member declaring that they do not take into consideration the effects of their rulings when making those decisions.

And he's losing the fifth vote now too.....
Laugh because the alternative is to cry? I have no respect for McCarthy, but have no idea how this soup opera will play out.
If we end up with a non-insane House, great--but still very unlikely....

While I do get some smiles from the other 'team' flubbing things up, I also feel concern. The House must pass legislation. The divided the GOP seems, the more empowered the extremes of the party will likely feel.

A GOP in charge of the House, with an empowered extreme, is not an outcome I desire.

"A GOP in charge of the House, with an empowered extreme, is not an outcome I desire."

This was going to happen anyway. In no universe was there ever going to be a GOP-led government that didn't have empowered extremists running it in the Years of Our Lord 2023-2024.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez signals that she'll support a 'compromise candidate' for Speaker of the House,

    https://www.rawstory.com/aoc-compromise-candidate/

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said she's open to supporting a possible compromise candidate for Speaker of the House as Republicans continue to be divided amongst themselves over Kevin McCarthy potential role, the New York Daily News reports.

Ocasio-Cortez suggested that if Democrats are given control of some House committees, they would in turn back a Republican for Speaker.

“I mean, hey, if we could get some chairs,” she told reporters, adding that Democrats would demand that a compromise Speaker raise the debt ceiling to avoid a national default along with “a combination of” other issues.
    . . . .

Just because this kind of compromise sounds plausible probably sinks it right out of the gate. Can you imagine them agreeing to anything when doing that would compromise any new Speaker into functional irrelevance?

Problem is, it sounds as if McCarthy has probably already promised every chairmanship he can. Surprised me that the person who approached AOC about this was Gosar, he of the animation showing him taking aim at AOC.

yeah, i can't imagine enough GOP votes would agree to giving dems a committee chair. or giving us anything that would make it worthwhile to help them elect a speaker. let them infight and fracture their caucus.

An irrelevant Speaker is a feature, not a bug for the Republican right wing - they had far better leaders in Boehner and even Ryan, than McCarthy could ever be, so the nutjobs made sure to drive them both out.

Someone remind me again about how coldly competent and Grown Up the Republicans are. I'm forgetting how that goes.
