New study suggests pre-K reduces crime and increases income

How effective is preschool? There is, to put it plainly, much research has been dedicated to this question and we still don't know for sure. One constant, however, is that every discussion of pre-K includes a reference to the Perry Preschool Project, a smallish study done in 1962 that provided high-quality preschool to poor Black students beginning at age three. But it's frankly tiresome to keep hearing about it, since it's now 60 years in the past and included only about 60 kids in the treatment group. If we haven't come up with better studies by now, we should just give up the whole thing.

However, the PPP does have one advantage over other studies: It took place 60 years in the past. This means that it provides a unique look at participants throughout their entire lives without any guesswork about things like expected future income or criminal activity. By now, that information is all available directly. A team of researchers has done just that and their conclusion is pretty simple:

The authors present benefits in terms of present value dollars, and they find that the effect of PPP on education is minimal. Ditto for health care. However, the impact on income and crime is considerable. Graduates of PPP ended up earning substantially more than the control group and engaged in substantially less crime. Nearly all of these benefits came between the ages of 16 and 40.

This is consistent with other studies of pre-K, which generally find that preschool doesn't make you smarter or better in the classroom. Rather, preschool seems to improve life outcomes by instilling good cognitive habits in other areas.

This is progress, and it makes a good case for universal pre-K. However, it still leaves the basic Black-white education gap in place, with Black kids graduating from high school with an average 9th-10th grade reading level compared to 12th grade for white kids. Until we figure out what to do about this, our education problems in the Black community are very far from solved.

If nothing else I laude the paper's authors for using a single-column format.

    What is "[s.e.]?"

In the age-54 follow up, when data on the siblings and adult children of the original participants were collected, 83% of the 123 participants were surveyed; 12% of the participants were not surveyed be- cause they were deceased. Accounting for death, we monetize the life-cycle outcomes of 95% of the original participants.

So the data are for even fewer than the initial 123 which itself was a small sample from a single geography. Actually, as I am reading, it seems not simply a single geography, but a single school.

cost per participant of 21,151 (2017 US dollars).

An interesting figure in that it is almost twice what I was paying in tuition for each of my children at a private Montessori school. And after a bit of additional web searching:
    https://www.valuepenguin.com/student-loans/average-cost-of-college

Our researchers found that the average cost of college for the 2017–2018 school year was $20,770 for public schools (in-state) and $46,950 for nonprofit private schools, only including tuition, fees, and room and board.

I've not gone further through the paper.

yeah, they are. I'm guessing the crime values s.e. mean most are fine, but a few are not. Though perhaps presented as change in % incarcerated may be a better measure of the effect of the program.

They are, but I don't think that's unexpected. The range of outcomes is certainly going to be broad, and the small sample size exacerbates the magnitude of the effect.

CRT teaches that the content of our educational system, i.e., Western science and Enlightenment political and philosophical beliefs, is systemically racist. So Black children are never going to perform equally in that system. The master's tools will never destroy the master's house.

Poor Kev, too stupid and lazy to know about the Hawthorne Effect. Not covered at his New England finishing school, where he majored in 18th century French literature, with a minor in croissants. LOL

    https://nypost.com/2021/07/12/major-gang-war-in-bronx-leaving-teens-dead-in-the-streets/

“A “major gang war” between ruthless Bronx crews that are fearless of cops has left a 13-year-old boy and two other teens dead in just the past five days, law-enforcement sources told The Post on Monday.

“We can’t keep them in [jail], and they’re going after each other,’’ a high-ranking police source said, referring to juvenile suspects who end up back on the streets after being sent to family court instead of being prosecuted as adults. A city prosecutor added, “They don’t go to jail, so they do robberies, get in fights and carry guns.”

Yeah… let’s ponder the socioeconomic causes of idiot teenagers and their idiot parents… assuming they have what we white folks might call parents. They are losers. They will always be losers. And the sad part is just how much the so called black community make endless excuses for these losers. Ok. It’s my fault. Reconstruction failed so gangsters in the Bronx want to kill each other. I still don’t care if they whack each other. No one does.

There are criminals in every society.

A Chicago rapper was gunned down in a hail of bullets moments after he walked out of jail and had been fitted for an ankle bracelet, reports said.

When 31-year-old Londre Sylvester left Cook County Jail just before 9 p.m. Saturday, gunmen got out of two parked cars and shot him 64 times, according to a police report obtained by the Chicago Tribune.

Two women were also injured in the ambush — a 60-year old woman who’d just posted Sylvester’s bond and a 35-year-old woman who worked at the jail, CWBChicago said.

Another lost soul. Solving the crime problem means solving the culture problem.

According to several confirmed reports, Los Angeles rapper Indian Red Boy was shot and killed while on Instagram Live and it is reported that the rapper was killed for disrespecting a mural of slain L.A. legend Nipsey Hussle. He was 21 years old.

      No one cares.

Many black men commit crimes (in proportion to their population) because the black family has fallen apart. Expect more crime from men in other races as more and more children are brought up in a single-parent home with no father figure. The great society welfare and housing programs started the break up of the family unit - this includes whites, blacks, Hispanics, and others. Riddle me this. How did the black family survive slavery and Jim Crow but not the Great Society?
