One out of six Republicans TELLS POLLSTERS they think the government is run by pedophiles. There's a significant difference between what people believe and what they tell pollsters -- just look at actual vs reported voting rates -- and like all good cultists, MAGAts know to repeat the party line whenever asked, irrespective of what they might believe personally.

Gullible and/or stupid in general yes, but I think not THAT gullible or stupid.

one out of six Republicans will agree with any negative statement about Democrats. it's performance, not opinion.

yes, and I think rationally one can expect that a significant portion are using Pedophiles to mean "Gays and others we can't now openly despise" wherre as old usage Pedophile proper is confused with homosexual, etc.
        (see Mr Musk e.g.)

Of couse a certain percent believe this literally.

The party affiliation of satan-worshipping pedophiles was not mentioned in the question.

No problem. These folks will also be the first casualties when the next pandemic hits and they won't get vaxed because of various conspiracy theories. Darwin wins out.

I do not have a hard time believing that 1 in 6 Republicans believes this. That gullible? -- oh, yeah. Or, that delusional, I dunno. They will stand by whatever they need to, to make it work out for them. We're not dealing with rational people who simply disagree, any more.

25% of all Americans tell pollsters they think the world is run by lizardmen.
10% of Americans tell pollsters they believe the Earth is flat.
In 2019, 48% of Americans believed Trump colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election.

People believe a lot of crazy things.

    1. Citizen99

Um . . . the trump campaign did collude with Russian cutouts. The fool Mueller didn't prosecute because no one in trump's campaign actually signed a contract with the Russian GOVERNMENT. That's those norms for ya!

I suspect all this tells us is that the ever-diminishing sliver of the population "willing to answer a few questions" leans heavily towards kooks and fools.

You know, for some, if not all, of those people, they have to believe something like that to justify supporting the stuff that Republicans do. They don’t want to admit why they really support the GOP.

Who the hell are the 8% of DEMOCRATS who think the government is run by Satan Worshipping Pedophiles????????

  8. bizarrojimmyolsen

As a reminder the whole Q anon thing is just a repackaging of the old antisemitic blood libel, so when people say the government is run by a secret cabal of pedophile satanists they mean a secret jewish cabal. It’s antisemitism all the way down.

I've long assumed that the "pedophile!!!" assertions by Republicans was just more of their standard projectionism. It would definitely fit with news reports (i.e. scandals).

The lizard people thing is weird, though. Did they get it from that sf miniseries "V" that aired in 1983?

    1. ScentOfViolets

Lizard people goes at least as far back as News of the World conspiracy theories in the 1970's, much further back if you think of Hyperborean fiction.

Fools are easily distracted. How to believe anything without adequate evidence except for the miracles of God and religion? We shouldn't confuse the realms...faith should be restricted to religion, which is about human souls and salvation, not how we otherwise pragmatically solve problems and challenges, or we will all die in some irrational expression of violence as common sense and science perish at the hands of ignorance and conflicts of faith that have no means to reconcile themselves.

Respect and humility are essential (in both faith and empiricism, religion and science).
