Raw data: Drug overdose deaths are finally falling

According to provisional figures from the CDC, the pandemic surge in drug overdose deaths is finally starting to turn around:

Since its peak last August, drug overdose deaths have fallen 13%.

    That would make sense. We made changes to pain management that were going to reduce the number of people becoming addicted to prescription painkillers. There has also been a lot of reporting on the risks of fentanyl, so the average person is more aware of the ways they can accidentally overdose and take precautions. To top it all off, we've expanded access to Narcan.

    Skeptical. Why did "drug overdose deaths" follow Covid19 deaths? It appears to me that something was afoot to record Covid deaths as drug overdose deaths. The data clearly matches Covid deaths and I see no reason that drug overdose deaths would have risen suddenly at the same time.
