Raw data: Views on abortion by state

There's not a ton of state-by-state polling on abortion, but when Roe v. Wade is overturned and control of abortion law is returned to the states this is suddenly going to become very important.

Here is a Pew survey from 2014 that asks whether abortion should be legal or illegal in "most or all" cases. I have eliminated the "don't know" respondents to produce percentages only among the people who have an actual opinion.

"Cuius regio, eius religio" didn't prevent the 30 years war, and it won't solve the problem here.
    Once people become convinced
    - that they are right in EVERYTHING
    - that anyone who disagrees with them is Satan incarnate
    - that they understand exactly what causes suffering in the world, and can fix it
    then we're doomed.

Abortion will act as THE shibboleth of coming civil war because it has the fantastic advantage that (just like the Reformation lunacies) it exist PURELY in the realm of opinion. Group 1 prioritizes ethical choice a over b; Group 2 prioritizes b over a; and there's absolutely NOTHING to convince one over the other. Unlike the other touchstones of this fight, everything from gay issues to trans issues to race issues, there are no pesky real world facts that might slightly confuse the issue, no possibility of looking at real world outcomes of different policies. We can leap straight to the pure hatred, and straight to the insistence than anyone who doesn't see things our way is "obviously" doing it for perverse reasons like they hate humanity. After all, the same claims have been made without difficulty about every other in history.

We've seen this play multiple times, from the Reformation to the Communists to the Khmer Rouge. It always ends the same way. And it *cannot* be reasoned with.

You can show people the historical analogies

You can point out the matches between the claims of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and statements about "The Patriarchy", ie a group of people with power who have been vaguely responsible for all the ills of humanity throughput history (as shown by "scholars" like Marija Gimbutas).
You can tell people that maybe, just maybe, they should think about this video:

None of it will make a bit of difference. Society has leapt off the cliff. It will play out as it plays out.

Nah science shows definitively a fertilized egg is not in any way a person the instant it is implanted.

That, of course, is not the point in dispute. The point in dispute is about sacrality.
And that's my point -- each half not only hates the other half but refuses to even attempt to understand their point.

As Lois Griffin would say, Hate is a hell of a drug. And we have most of the population now high on the stuff and eager to do something about it.

There's a huge chasm between believing abortion should be 100% illegal, and believing there are times when it's a necessary evil. "Most" and "all" should not be grouped together. I strongly suspect most of the category are in the "most" camp. Even online I have only once encountered someone who said abortion should never be legal-- and that person flat out denied that abortion could ever be medically necessary as a matter of life and death.
