Retail sales rise slightly in October

Retail sales continued to hold up in October, rising at an annual rate of 1.3% after adjusting for inflation:

Retail has been pretty flat for the past year, but it's still above its pre-pandemic trend. There's no sign of weakness yet.

Retail sales will probably jump right before the tariffs are implemented and tax breaks for Things Liberals Like are ended. Personally, I’m making a shopping list right now for stuff that I think I’ll need in the next 2 years to buy it all before tariffs are even announced, cause that’s when the prices will begin to rise in anticipation. (Thanks disaster capitalists!)

Sidebar: so glad we already bought an electric car last year so the tax break was in the past. I could totally see a Trumpy IRS selecting tax returns with green tax credits in them for the “Severe Audit” bucket.
