Ron DeSantis really wants your money

NBC News reports that state officials working for Ron DeSantis are soliciting campaign contributions from lobbyists with business before the state:

NBC News spoke with 10 Republican lobbyists in Florida, all of whom said they couldn't remember being solicited for donations so overtly by administration officials — especially at a time when the governor still has to act on the state budget.

....“What the f--- am I supposed to do?” one lobbyist said. “I have a lot of business in front of the DeSantis administration.”

....“The practice feeds the DeSantis corrupt swampy meme perfectly for opponents. For no f------ reason,” said another veteran Florida Republican. “Hard to be Mr. Break the Internet and Swamp when you do this. Really dumb.”

....“Whoever is telling these kids to do this has lost their damn mind,” said another Florida Republican lobbyist.

Quite the guy, our Ron. Maybe this is illegal; maybe it's not. He doesn't care.

I mean, climate change and the more frequent hurricane/flooding events that climate change brings are already destroying the property insurance market in Florida. Might as well add “risk of large objects falling out of the sky” to the list of “things that might destroy your home that Floridians can’t financially protect themselves against.”

It's stuff like this, though, that makes me think predictions of the imminent demise of RDS's White House aspirations are premature. The fact is he's as ruthless AF. And, while he might come across as hapless at times, he's no dummy.

The smart money's on Trump, make no mistake. But it's still very early in the GOP pre-primary. Moreover, the recent turbulence accruing to the RDS brand may actually be somewhat helpful, in that this dynamic has prevented expectations from being set excessively high in the early going.

Agreed. Even if by some chance DeSantis wins the Rep nomination Trump will run as an independent to make sure Biden doesn't lose. In fact, Trump will do this if anyone but him is the nominee. I think it will be a blood bath.

Not that obvious, because he will need help with his legal problems, and a president that he helped elected would be pretty useful in this respect.

This is the problem with current media environment.

Washington Post, CNN, Nytimes - all creepily united in portraying Desantis' twitter rollout as a humiliating failure that demonstrates his incompetence (and Elon Musk's incompetence, too, because he is also on their shit list).

But Redstate, New York Post, etc. don't mention it. Instead, they focus on the fact that Desantis raised ~8 million in 24 hours (by way of comparison, Biden raised ~6 million in 24 hours in 2019 - more than any other Democrat in the primary).

Of these two, I think that his ability to raise money is far more indicative of his strength as a candidate than some AV issues he might have had at a press conference.

And yet the democrat-affiliated media is going for cheap laughs rather than taking him seriously. Which is stupid. Because that's how you get President Desantis, which nobody here (including me) should want.

Indeed, this is part of how we got President Trump.

When you have donors those people are helping you in other ways as well, I think is what this is saying.

Bloomberg had plenty of money, few donors.

        I prefer DeSantis over Trump.

not to mention trump remains in serious legal jeopardy and who knows what will come out over the course of the primary campaign. there probably isn't anything that could turn trump's base against him, but maybe.

      1. Jasper_in_Boston

Right. There are just too many unknowns regarding Trump's legal problems. We don't know what the next ten months or so bring. I personally believe Trump is a relatively heavy favorite for the GOP nomination. But more like 70-30 instead of 90-10. A lot could happen.

Words like fascist get thrown around rather lightly these days, but DeSantis really does have the instincts of a dictator, and I would imagine if he got the chance, he'd act as one. I suppose in some senses, he already has.

I think the fact that one doesn't know whether he's broken laws attests to the fact that Florida has changed the laws so much that you can't know for sure if public grift is an actual crime anymore.

Yale and Harvard could take the boy out of Florida. But EVEN with the help of the Judge Advocate Corps, they couldn't take the mafia out of the boy.
