Rand Paul: I will shut down the Senate over any COVID bill whatsoever

Welp, this is what we're up against:

This "don't trust the CDC" narrative has taken hold with many in my family as an excuse to not get vaxxed.

I've already lost three people to the 'rona, one of them after vaccines became available. Rand (and co.) are killing people I love, and I don't have words foul enough to spit at him.

    Who's the bigger menace?

Rand Paul? Or all the Republicans in the Senate and elsewhere who won't lift a finger to curb his attention-getting stunts?

      1. wvmcl2

Rand is trying hard to outdo his dad in stupidity and recklessness, and is succeeding.

Interesting how often the sons turn out to be worse than the dads - Jerry Falwell Jr and Franklin Graham spring to mind.

Hey, that kid's a doctor too!
    -----
There was a recent write up on how anti-vaxxers are raising money online. Looks link Rand there must have read the same piece....expect "medical freedom" posts and raising money for "legal fees"....

  4. Vog46

Rand Paul is a self certified Ophthalmologist
The certification from HIS OWN BOARD was open book

This guy has NO BUSINESS commenting on any medical issues

Sadly, it appears to be a case of ideological extremism (is that an oxymoron?), rather than the expedient extremism that has become all too typical of too many.

It's because social conservatives represent the virus.

The governor of Florida is doing anything he can to promote the virus' interest.

The governor of Texas is doing anything he can to promote the virus' interest.

Rand Paul is doing anything he can to promote the virus' interest.

It's the most harm they can get away with causing.

Your evidence here doesn't quite fit your hypothesis. Rand Paul is hard to characterize politically. He's an odd mix of social conservatism and libertarianism, and doesn't fit well in either camp. Those two groups on the right are often at odds with each other, especially over social issues. I wouldn't call Paul a social conservative and slot him in with Abbot and DeSantis--who more clearly are.

Probably the characterization that best includes all three is just reckless opportunist Republicans.

The haah-smoking, coke-snorting, Brooks Brothers-suited Reason readers don't want to share their stash with a negro or a wetback.

I think of social conservatism as a learning disability which is based in an anxiety state created by an incapacity for empathy or context, where, as the child develops he doesn't spontaneously 'get' the world around him that everyone else seems to be a part of, and thereby reacts against it, which doesn't always end up as ordinarily associated with classic political conservatism, though that ideology exists only to exploit that condition.

I admit my view isn't terribly standard, but I think it captures the gamut including libertarians, and those I think of as leftist social conservatives, far-left humorless drips who often seem to experience conversion episodes and end up as far-right humorless drips, because the far-right is so much more common and coddled.

    Bring forth those mandates.

It's about the fines, the accumulation of fines, the failure to appear, the arrest warrant, then the arrest and incarceration, and the eventual loss of voting rights of these people.

Bonus: Job openings and higher wages!

  8. tomsayingthings

It's impressive that he stands in such bold defiance of Nancy Pelosi, who has no jurisdiction over the Senate. Very brave!

No, Kamala is the new Hillary.

I imagine the QBots are pissed Doug Emhoff isn't a widower from his first marriage, because if he were the Kamala Kill List would have its first victim.

True. She's getting the same Marie Antoinette treatment that Clinton
got. It's obvious that she's scaring the GOP enough that they're working up the ratf*cking for the Crazy Uncle demo.

The case for school closures and for mask mandates have grown weaker over time. Studies regarding school closures seem to say they do more harm than good. And with the vaccine now widely available, the case for requiring masks by government edict is now much weaker. An unfortunate side-effect is that many on the Trump right conclude these shifts validate their views all along. They loop back to thinking covid was a kind of hoax to hurt Trump - just a bad flu - and getting a vaccine is pointless. So yeah, just ignore the CDC, part of the deep state.

    1. KawSunflower

No - pediatric hospitals are becoming strained, if not full, & we now have not only the Delta variant, but Delta + & Lambda- the vaccine will protect vaccinated people from dying of Delta, but the time is approaching when the failure to immunize enough people will likely result in a variant for which current vaccines will afford NO protection.

Children are now dying, & Delta alone has caused some patients to be flown to distant hospitals.

Some on the right pretend that the CDC recommendations are wrong because they change- but the have to, as circumstances change.

      1. Pabodie

I just wish there was a way for everyone to understand this. I came here to post pretty much the same thing, but you said it better. the Right COUNTS on their voters being incurious and driven by emotion. It's seems impossible to break their fever. I honestly have no hope anymore. A vax-resistant variant is quite literally being created by the GOP, and then god help us.

      2. ProgressOne

So are you saying the schools should be closed?

Or is it mask mandates you support for K-12? And mask mandates for adults too when in public?

      1. ProgressOne

"Stop trying to get my son killed."

        Spare me the drama.

CDC guidance is: "Students benefit from in-person learning, and safely returning to in-person instruction in the fall 2021 is a priority."

Perhaps you disagree with the experts.

I didn't say anything for or against mask mandates for K-12 kids. For vaccinated adults, as I said, the case for mask mandates is now weaker.

  10. Jasper_in_Boston

We know fully vaccinated persons can become infected, and, while they are not at high risk of developing serious illness, they can transmit the virus to others, including children. Adults, at least, make a conscious choice to leave themselves vulnerable by eschewing vaccination. But children can't yet get vaccinated, and everything I've seen suggests the risks to kids is increasing.

So let's hear it for Rand Paul and his efforts to kill American children. He really is one of the scummiest people conceivable.

    1. Rattus Norvegicus

Rand Paul, Ron DeathSantis, Greg Abbot, Greg Gianforte, Steve Doocy, etc. etc. Their numbers are legion.

The anti-vax movement is an essentially male enterprise, even if it includes a lot of women like MTG. That's because all of its leaders, exemplified by Randy Paul, are unmitigated dicks.

    1. KawSunflower

Yes, with all of the male Republicans who are failing efforts to protect even their own followers, I wonder if J. D. Vance should alter his belief that maybe childless citizens should be disenfranchised & allow only those who back protective health for children (& all) to vote. What a bunch of unprintables.

    2. Martin Stett

The male may be the ones making money, but the ones who show up screaming at school board meetings are women. It's like the old anti-terrorist meme: "Shoot the women first."

  12. TriassicSands

The world's second stupidest person speaks. Sorry, Rand, as hard as you try you'll never be dumber than Trump!

  13. Rich Beckman

How many years does one have to hold a public office before one has a career as a politician?

It may be his second career, but ten+ years at it strikes me as a career politician.

    1. Martin Stett

He's just another GOP Cincinnatus. Once he fixes government, he'll go right back to his quack eye doctor practice.

  14. n1cholas

In case anyone hasn't noticed already, the Republican Party is fully intent on letting COVID do it's thing. It's a political issue. Trying to reason with a Republican over it is not just a waste of time, but counterproductive.

Best to get your children vaccinated and let it burn through the ranks of the fascists in hopes it can help prevent a likely hot civil war.

All you can do is protect yourselves and the non-fascists in your life by getting them vaccinated.

    1. Pabodie

The trouble is that the un-vaxxed are the testbed for variants. Sooner or later a vax-resistant variant could appear.

  15. Justin

Civil war. It’s the only way. They started it on January 6. The only question is whether we will fight or surrender.

      1. Justin

😂 You can’t even deal with me, how will you survive the republicans? They will chew you up and spit you out. It’s going to be fun to watch.
