YouTube remains the national champion of teen social media sites

TikTok and Instagram get all the attention, but YouTube remains by far the most popular social media app among American teens:

On YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, Hispanic teens report using them "almost constantly" at rates more than three time higher than white teens. Among teens, generally speaking, social media is most heavily used by Hispanics, girls, and low-income households.

I look at YouTube all the time and I don't even think about doing it. I don't think about it as a company or a brand or a platform or an app. It never occurs to me. It seems like it's not a thing but an area.

But Twitter and Reddit do seem like things, platforms, brands and companies. I never look at the others.

I use YT for things like how to change the cabin filter in my car or other how-to guides. I really don't understand spending hours watching streamers play video games

I always find it funny when people refer to YouTube as "social media". I've never thought of it as social media but I guess that's just because of how I use it. I use it as a video service (music theory and production, woodworking, movie critiques and reviews, comedy, etc) and mostly on my TV so I never even see the comments. I think of it as closer to Netflix than TikTok.

I agree that YouTube is more "media" than "social", being a video hosting platform for the most part. However, there are some channels that host a lot of livestreams with live chats, and those can become quite social and build a community.
