Department of Justice not welcome in red states

This doesn't inspire confidence:

On Monday, the Justice Department announced that it would send federal monitors to 64 jurisdictions nationwide to monitor how elections are being conducted. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties were all slated to receive federal monitors from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. But Brad McVay, the chief counsel for the Florida Department of State, said in a letter issued late Monday that those monitors would not be allowed inside polling places under Florida law.

....Separately, Missouri officials on Friday denied the Justice Department’s request to conduct routine inspections under the Americans With Disabilities Act and Voting Rights Act at polling places on Election Day. Secretary of State John Ashcroft (R) reiterated that stance in a meeting Monday....He compared Justice Department officials from the U.S. attorney’s office from the Western District of Missouri to “jackbooted thugs.”

As for John Ashcroft, he generally goes by the name Jay. He's the son of the real John Ashcroft, upholding the family tradition.

Just post them right outside the polling place and make sure they are clearly identified. Anyone with a complaint can come straight to them.

So armed militia kooks in tactical gear "monitoring" ballot drop boxes is ok, but not DOJ election officials. Roger that.

I swear we're just about thiiiiiiiis close to local Republicans just saying fuck it and going back to holding straight up Klan rallies to GOTV.

Nothing new here. The Department of Justice was created for the very purpose of monitoring elections in the red (aka "traitorous 'confederate'") states, to ensure that the recently freed African-Americans would be able to exercise their Constitutional right to vote.

Over a century and a half, and the traitors of the confederacy still hold sway.

I'm pretty sure if the feds show up at the polling places, no one can stop them from observing. Federal law supersedes state law.

And the Voting Rights Act still exists even if Roberts/Alito/Thomas/Kennedy/ Asshat weakened a key provision.

      "Federal law supersedes state law."

Right. And which Federal law gives the Justice Dept to demand access to a state's polling places?

Possibly the same laws that allowed the federal government to send troops in to make sure black kids could physically enter school buildings all across the south. (Or maybe SCOTUS has repealed those laws by now?)

To the extent that the US federal gov't and the executive office specifically has the power to faithfully carry out the law of the land, the issue isn't about a specific federal law, but that of the Constitutional powers granted to the federal gov't. The ADA is one such means, albeit not straightforward. The Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act also can apply.

Chief Justice Roberts was quite clear in his ruling that the best way to deal with racial discrimination was to deny its existence. Missouri and Florida are not following the law, but they are following the spirit of Roberts opinion.

Just wondering...why Broward, Miami Dade, and Palm Beach? Those three counties along the southern end of the Atlantic coast, all went heavily Democratic in 2020, with a vote total for the three counties showing a 60-40 split favoring Biden.

Does anybody worry about voter suppression in counties out in the western panhandle. Consider Escambia and Bay counties, for example. They went heavily Republican in 2020, with a vote total showing a 63-37 split favoring Trump. And those are counties that are called "South Alabama."

To be clear, I think rejection of the DOJ by red states is really bad. Then again, the Republican's I work with will say, non cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is also bad.

We are a better country when Federal agencies can work in all states and territories.

But, I have it on good authority by some guy on this site that the Republicans keep their radicals at arms length just like the Democrats do. So, how could this possibly be happening?

    Real chin scratcher that.

(I mean if the Oath Keepers are considered Republican radicals, then...well it still doesn't apply because the party leadership has done nothing to distance themselves from the Oath Keepers.)

The Federalist knows what Brandon is up to.

"In its latest election-rigging scheme, the Biden Department of Justice has just announced it is deploying attorneys under its Civil Rights Division to mostly blue and swing counties across the country on Election Day."

Obviously they are going to block Republican observers from witnessing the frantic ballot dumps which the same source says will occur during the days following the election, as Democrats learn how many they need to manufacture to overtake the Republican leads.
