Does jail await Donald Trump?

Quick question: at this point, does anyone truly think Donald Trump doesn't want to get jailed for contempt? He's obviously angling pretty hard for it, and he likely thinks it would be a big campaign boost. He'd be just like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.! The MAGA base would swoon over Donald heroically facing off with the Deep State and sticking up for his rights.

Either that or he really is literally unable to keep his yap shut. But I don't think so.

no matter what strategy they take, it backfires.

his voters certainly love the chaos so long as their SS checks show up on time

and maybe jailing helps him, but jail time also sends a message to future billionaires who want to be the next trump

a 30 day suspended sentence won't do that

I don't get the sense he wants to be jailed. He posted a comment about the process of jury selection, that is one that did not violate the gag order, and quickly deleted it. That seems like odd behavior if he wants to be jailed.

I don't think he really wants to be jailed, because he's a scared, coddled baby at heart. But he also thinks pushing the issue and expressing his outrage publicly is helpful to his campaign, he knows the judge really doesn't want to put him in jail so he has a lot of leeway, and if it DOES happen that's an even bigger political win despite his personal discomfort. So he's willing to risk it.

i think yeah, but it also depend on that "the slammer" means for trump. do they just house arrest him, or put him in a hotel room near the court house with a stern warning not to leave for the night? or is it really a night in a regular jail cell? i think the latter might really scare him, but is the least likely to happen.

It has been made very clear that it's Rikers island. Maybe he can get the same cell his best friend, Epstein, had.

Put him in with the general population after relieving the secret service of their duties. Three months should do it.

The judge can have him removed from the court to watch on a monitor.

It's interesting that when the network news showed Trump complaining about his gag order after the trial yesterday, none of the journalists argued about what the gag order meant, and that it did not muffle him completely.

    1. kahner

that' really not any kind of punishment though. he'll be getting away with shit no one else gets away with yet again.

    2. emjayay

It only muffles him about the very narrow categories of witness and jury member harassment, things that normal indicted people would never do anyway.

He should get to cool his heels in Rikers for a few days. Treat him like the common crook he is.

If Trump would just behave himself in the court room and act like a goddamn adult for one in his life, he just might have had a shot at persuading maybe one or two members of the jury that he's not some evil asshole who deserves to go to prison. But after having to watch his spoiled-ass antics up close for a couple of weeks, I'll be surprised if the jury doesn't return a death sentence.

MLK, Jr., from "Letter from a Birmingham Jail":

In spite of my shattered dreams of the past, I came to Birmingham with the hope that the white religious leadership in the community would see the justice of our cause and, with deep moral concern, serve as the channel through which our just grievances could get to the power structure. I had hoped that each of you would understand. But again I have been disappointed. I have heard numerous religious leaders of the South call upon their worshippers to comply with a desegregation decision because it is the law, but I have longed to hear white ministers say follow this decree because integration is morally right and the Negro is your brother.

DJT, from "Letter from a Rikers Island Jail" (coming soon):

In spite of my shattered dreams of the past, I came to Rikers Island with the hope that the white (but apparently not white enough) leadership in the community would see the justice of my cause and, with deep moral concern, put an END to the SHAM TRIAL to which I have been subjected. It is unprecedented for a once and future president to be expected to follow the law. I AM THE LAW, and the sooner that the CROOKED & HIGHLY CONFLICTED Judge Juan Merchan understands that, the better it will be for him, his wife and children, and for all the families of the members of the jury. As ALL the Legal Scholars & Experts on Fox have said, there is NO CASE. Now the judge -- his name is JUAN, did you know that? (yes, JUAN!) -- has taken away my FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS and thrown me in the HOOSEGOW. (I saw a Negro down the row who called me "Brother." Can you believe it?) I pray for you, all my TRUE Brothers & Sisters who worship & adore me, that when I am restored to my rightful place on the throne* at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, after a FREE & FAIR ELECTION, we exercise our fundamental Second Amendment Rights & once and for all put an end to the CARNAGE IN AMERICA.

The 10X normal mercury levels in his blood may have been more damaging to brain function, and permanently.

Maybe the stars have lined up to make this week the weirdest news week of the year. The trial of a former president in New York is ongoing, but that seems almost normal by now. Ditto, the puppy-killing governor who wants to be vice president. Wall Street, on the other hand, was so un-weird today it was weird. I have four entire cable channels devoted to covering market news 24/7, yet the S&P 500 today closed with a drop of exactly 0.03 points, a loss of 0.000578%. So much wasted effort. Everyone could have just taken the day off. Earlier in the day, I watched a commencement speech at the Ohio State University that turned into a pitch for Bitcoin. That was only the second most weird thing at the event. I later learned that the mother of a graduating senior apparently committed suicide, jumping from the stands to her death. In political news, the NYT had a story on the leading third-party candidate, the younger and "healthier" alternative to the major party candidates, with this headline: "R.F.K. Jr. Says Doctors Found a Dead Worm in His Brain. The presidential candidate has faced previously undisclosed health issues, including a parasite that he said ate part of his brain." Whoa.

Here's how one Twitterer summed it up:
"You either die a Kennedy with a hole in the brain or live long enough to become a Kennedy with a hole in the brain."

That was not just anybody but a sitting member in the House of Representatives.

    Weird.

    Those are not exclusive options.

Thinking he WANTS jail is probably what stayed Engoron's hand. But you can be smarter about it.

Instead of jail, why not put him in an orange jumpsuit and send him out on the highway to pick up trash?

  9. jonziegler

"He'd be just like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.!"

No, I think in his mind he'd be reprising Hitler.

  10. ddoubleday

He'll never actually go to Riker's or a prison because of security concerns. Worst case, the judge will order him into house arrest at Trump Tower, possibly with an ankle monitor.

    1. memyselfandi

The secret service and rikers guards have an agreement in place on how they would handle a Trump stay there.. He goes into segregation, has a solitary cell and the secret service remain outside the cell.

  11. lawnorder

I have no doubt that throwing Trump in jail will excite the MAGA base. On the other hand, they were going to vote for him any way. I do not believe that imprisoning Trump will gain him a single vote, but it may well cost him some.

  12. cld

RFK, jr --has a brain that would kill a parasitic worm. That is some serious street cred.

We've never had a presidential candidate like this before.

  13. painedumonde

He doesn't want to get jailed, there's no strategy except to seem tough. It really boils down to basic human foibles that he thinks he's a special case, deserves respect, doesn't need to give any, and he plays the part. That's it. There's no strategy, just ego. It's the brand.

A reasonable person might see the choices and because they've been backed into a corner might angle for martyrdom or plea. But not him, he can't lose. It is impossible, against the nature of things. So now he is caught in zugzwang. Shut up or get cuffed up. My bet is he won't shut up, but the judge (and by extension the entire justice system) is too much of a pansy to do anything about it except fine him again even though he has made threats of jail time. That is the nature of American Justice™, you do time if you don't matter or you injure Capital.

Make no mistake though, this isn't strategy.
